Thoughts of Mukta Avachat-Puntambekar at SCDL’s Silver Jubilee Program
Pune, May 9, 2025: “Skill training plays a major role in the rehabilitation of people struggling with addiction. If proper attention is given and they are provided with skill-based education, they too can lead a good life,” said Mukta Avachat Puntambekar, Director of Muktangan De-addiction Center. She was speaking as the chief guest at the event organized at the auditorium of Symbiosis Skills and Professional University, Kiwale. The occasion marked the 18th Foundation Day of Symbiosis Open Education Society, the Silver Jubilee of Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning (SCDL), and the 9th Anniversary of Symbiosis Skills and Professional University, Kiwale.
Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, President of Symbiosis Open Education Society, presided over the function. Also present was Dr. Swati Mujumdar, Principal Director of the society.
At the event, the Silver Jubilee logo of SCDL was unveiled by the dignitaries. Mukta Avachat Puntambekar stated that Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning is making a significant difference in the lives of many youths by providing skill training, which is helping them improve their financial situation and lead better lives.
Dr. Swati Mujumdar said, “We are providing skill training to people from grassroots communities. While doing so, we ensure the training aligns with current market and business demands. Online learning has played an important role in reaching education to remote areas. Over the past 25 years, SCDL has contributed significantly, and in the coming five years, we must move in a new direction. ‘Education on demand’ — along with education, there’s a growing need for skill training. Currently, SCDL offers certificates and diplomas, but in the next two years, our aim is to transform it into an open university that can offer degree programs instead of diplomas.”
Dr. S. B. Mujumdar added, “Many people are associated with SCDL, and our staff has played a crucial role in this journey. Completing 25 years is no small feat — it’s a matter of fortune. We listened to suggestions from many people who joined us along the way, and the response we received was overwhelming. Our student numbers grew to 200,000. Every educational institution has its own journey to tell, and ours started with a clear vision. We must adapt to the changes in society.” He also fondly remembered Anil Avachat during his speech.
During the event, former students Nikhilesh Kulkarni, Yogesh Joshi, Hemant Sethia, and Atul Upadhyay were felicitated. Successful alumni such as Gayatri Pillai, Dilip Sharma, Rituparna Mukherjee, Namita Kadu, Madhura Joshi, Jyotika Kolhatkar, and Yash Kenjale were also honored. Employees who have been associated with the organization for over 25 years were felicitated as well, including Registrar Kumbhar, Nutan Gore, Sunil Dhumal, Ravindra Shelar, and Bhaskar Nikam. Suhas Bhosale and Padmpriya Iravati were honored for over 10 years of service, and Amala Kiran Joshi for more than 15 years. Among those serving for more than 30 years, Pradeep Dolas, Pramod Bhosale, and Shobha Amol were felicitated.
Later in the program, a miniature cake modeled after the SCDL building was cut. The audience enthusiastically participated in various cultural performances organized by the staff. The event was hosted by Shalini Nair, and retired Major Sonali Kadam gave the vote of thanks.
