Pune, August 24: Pharmaish, a technology-enabled platform developed by Dr. Dipmala Patil (PhD in Pharmacy), is set to create a digital bridge between consumers and nearby participating licensed retail pharmacies, making prescription-based medicine access more convenient while strengthening the role of neighbourhood pharmacies in the healthcare ecosystem.
Pharmaish is a DPIIT-recognized startup under the Startup India initiative and is scheduled to roll out its services from next month, starting with Pune.
The idea behind Pharmaish emerged from Dr. Dipmala Patil’s own experience and observations as a pharmacy professional and researcher.
While sharing the thought behind the concept Dr. Patil said, “The thought began with a simple question: why should a caregiver have to leave a person who needs care simply to reach a pharmacy? I observed that the challenge was often not the absence of pharmacies, but the gap between consumers and pharmacies that were willing to serve them.”
Dr Patil pointed out that the pharmacies are increasingly adopting digital channels. This highlighted the need for a common technology platform connecting consumers with nearby pharmacies. Such a platform will make medicine purchase more convenient without replacing the pharmacy store in the neighbourhood.
Through the Pharmaish mobile application, consumers can digitally share prescriptions with participating nearby licensed pharmacies through various easy options like digital upload, photo capture, whatsapp and voice assistance that suit all age groups.
The pharmacy independently reviews the prescription shared by the user on Pharmaish and decides whether it can fulfil the request. Dispensing, billing, packing and delivery remain the responsibility of the licensed pharmacy. Consumers are not charged with any separate fee for using Pharmaish platform.
It may be noted that Pharmaish is not an e-pharmacy and does not purchase, stock, store, dispense or physically deliver medicines, prescribe medicines or make clinical decisions. It does not earn a medicine margin, percentage commission or profit share from medicine sales. Its model is based on a one-time retailer tech-platform joining fee and platform usage fees.
The Pharmaish platform also reflects a “Vocal for Local” approach by strengthening the neighbourhood pharmacies through technology. Responsible medicine use and awareness around Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) are among the top principles followed by Pharmaish.
Ahead of launch, the Pharmaish team has interacted with more than 500 pharmacies to understand requirements and validate the concept. Services will initially start in Pune, followed by phased expansion to other cities, with a long-term objective of connecting consumers with neighbourhood pharmacies across India.
